Every creator dashboard shows likes front and center. But likes are a vanity metric. They feel good, they don't predict growth, and optimizing for them can actually hurt your reach.
Here are the seven metrics worth tracking instead.
1. Save rate (Instagram, TikTok)
When someone saves your post, they're telling the algorithm this content has lasting value. Saved content gets distributed more aggressively than liked content. A save rate above 3% is excellent.
2. Share rate (all platforms)
Shares expand your reach beyond your existing audience. This is the single strongest growth signal because it means someone thought your content was worth attaching their name to.
3. Watch completion rate (TikTok, YouTube, Reels)
For video, this matters more than views. A video watched to 90% by 1,000 people will outperform a video watched to 20% by 10,000 people. The algorithm rewards retention.
4. Profile visits from content (Instagram, TikTok)
This measures conversion from casual viewer to interested follower. If your content gets views but not profile visits, your hook is working but your value proposition isn't clear.
5. Click-through rate on thumbnails (YouTube)
Your thumbnail is your headline. YouTube shows your video to a test audience first. If the CTR is strong, it expands distribution. Aim for 5%+ on established channels.
6. Comment depth (all platforms)
Not just comment count. Are people writing sentences or just dropping emojis? Meaningful comments signal genuine engagement, which platforms reward with more reach.
7. Follower-to-engagement ratio
If you have 100K followers but only 500 people engage per post, your audience is disengaged. A healthy ratio varies by platform, but consistent decline is a warning sign.

Track these weekly. Look for patterns in your top performers. Double down on what drives saves, shares, and profile visits. That's where growth comes from.
